The Republic of Grammaria is located about 150 miles off the coast of Borneo. Its main exports are semicolons and adverbial phrases, although demand for these is dwindling in today's laissez-faire linguistic climate.

The population of Grammaria has been shrinking steadily since Victorian times, due to the encroachment of 'worldly' grammatical values, and the diminishing popularity of Grammarian ideals, which are labelled 'élitist' by modern society.

Although citizens of other lands are welcome in Grammaria (indeed, the immigration programme is at the top of the Grammarians' governmental agenda), visitors seldom stay long, as they find the atmosphere somewhat hostile to the less literate.
